Mohammadu Bello Abubakar, a 84 year old Nigerian man who has 86 wives, has been arrested by a Nigerian Islamic court as he has refused to divorce all but four of his wives. A Sharia court has denied him bail until the next hearing.
An Islamic body in Nigeria had pronounced a fatwa - a religious edict on Mohammadu Bello Abubakar after he claimed that he had special God given powers. Mohammadu Bello Abubakar who is an Islamic preacher has more than 170 children and says that he can still marry.
He says, “If God permits me, I will marry more than 86 wives. A normal human being could not marry 86 – but I can only by the grace of God”. “I married 86 women and there is peace in the house – if there is peace, how can this be wrong?” he adds.
